The Void

Year: 2025
Role: Direction and Technical Development
Medium: Interactive Installation (real-time webcam manipulation, openFrameworks)
Exhibition: Showcased at Grace Exhibition Space for Cult of Consumption: Salvation with PixelMouth Collective.

Overview
An immersive installation exploring how digital technology distorts identity and consumes authenticity. Using real-time webcam manipulation, The Void critiques the hollow cycle of self-curation and consumerism in virtual spaces, inviting viewers into a visceral moment of self-reflection.

Challenge / Question
How do digital environments distort our sense of self, and what does it mean to curate identity in a world shaped by constant technological mediation?

Creative Solution
An interactive installation critiquing the parasitic relationship between consumerism, technology, and identity. Influenced by Black Mirror, dystopian literature, and artists like Jenny Holzer and Barbara Kruger, The Void invites viewers to question the authenticity of their digital personas and the emotional cost of self-reinvention in virtual spaces.

Technical Execution
Built using openFrameworks, the piece manipulates real-time webcam input to distort the viewer’s reflection. As participants engage, their image degrades into layered afterimages, symbolizing the recursive cycle of self-curation and reinvention.

Audience Experience
Participants see their reflection morph and decay in real time. This interaction forces a moment of confrontation—what happens when the version of yourself you control begins to disappear?

Impact
The Void fosters critical reflection on identity, control, and the emotional toll of self-performance in digital spaces. It highlights how technology consumes and reshapes authenticity, leaving viewers with a visceral sense of loss and disconnection.
